Using Points and Picas

071213picasandpoints

Even as an instructor, I sometimes struggle to remember everything I ever read, especially some of the complex mathematical graphic design problems that can arise; so straightforward articles such as the one on Using Points and Picas by Creative Curio, are really appreciated.

Here’s to passing on the knowledge to the students! Enjoy, guys!

Designing a CSS Based Template

071114veerle-csstemplate

I think everybody’s a fan of Veerle, one of the web’s most honoured illustrators and designers. Her blog is simply gorgeous, and her design aesthetic is matched by her technical skills. But what makes this worth keeping in your favourites list is the wealth of tutorials buried in the archives. Browse by category or date to find a lot of great tips and tricks for design, Illustrator, Photoshop, and so much more.

I’ve found an excellent 8-part tutorial that shows, step-by-step, how to create a website based on CSS and the very content/sidebar/footer/header ID tags I’ve been teaching y’all. Go through and practice by following along, and then try to create your own design using the same techniques.

Photoshop Keyboard Shortcuts

We’ve got 18 Exceptionally Useful Photoshop Shortcuts over here [via LifeHacker], and a smorgasbord of Photoshop shortcuts in PDF form, for every version from 5 up to CS3, over here.

Personally, I use CTRL+T to Transform (scale, rotate, skew); CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+S to save for web; CTRL+W to Close Document and CTRL+ALT+W to Close All, and the Spacebar for a temporary Hand tool.

I also use D to get to the Default black and white colours in the toolbar, and X will switch them (so the background becomes the foreground), plus B gives you a brush and the [ and ] keys will make the brush smaller and bigger.

CTRL+R gives you rulers, which gives you quick access to guides. CTRL+; shows and hides the guides and CTRL+’ shows and hides the grid.

And of course, the basics: CTRL+C for copy, CTRL+V for paste, CTRL+Z for undo, CTRL+S for save, CTRL+N for new, CTRL+H to hide or show display (like selection marquees). Oh, and CTRL+E will merge down the current or selected layers, plus I create an action set to F2 every time I install Photoshop that will flatten a layer.

I am stopping there although I know there are more that I use daily. What keyboard shortcuts do you use often?

Line Weight - From Sketch to Vector Illustration

070419VectorIllustration-LineWeights

“We need our lines to vary in what is known as “weight.” “Weight” of a line basically means how thick or thin your lines are. A lot of weight is thick a little weight is thin. Making your lines vary in weight adds a LOT of character (makes them look cool.)”

It’s a lot of reading but SO worth it. Lots of great graphics in the middle to explain line weights and such.
