Temporary Students’ Centre Interruption

August 2, 2008:The Students’ Centre website has been moved to a new location. Because it is a weekend our ISP will be unable to propagate the new location until Monday, which means that www.cdedstudents.com will be working properly again by Tuesday, August 5, at the earliest.

Students are encouraged to continue their studies by saving assignments locally and logging in on Tuesday or Wednesday to submit, OR by emailing assignments directly to their instructor. Online tests will be written after Tuesday. Students may skip ahead to the next assignment if they are to write a test this week.

CD-ED apologizes sincerely for the unexpected delay in the Students’ Centre service. No penalties for late assignments will be exacted this week. Please keep in touch with your instructor starting on Monday.

How to reduce distractions while your online class is in session

MSN has a surprisingly good article up this week aimed at helping online students battle distraction.

Online learning may be ideal for your busy schedule — but your busy schedule isn’t always ideal for online learning. Family members compete for your attention, new e-mails pop up in your inbox, and your growing to-do list beckons.

So when the “classroom” also happens to be your kitchen (or the kids’ playroom or the family room), how do you tune out distractions?

Tips include sticking to a schedule, establishing a workspace, and foreseeing & fending off distractions.

I highly recommend taking a look!

OK, I really need to tout our own wares here. Our NEW 3D Game Artist program will give you all the skills necessary to apply for a job such as 3D Background Artist, 3D Artist, or Environment Artist.

The course materials are based on the requirements listed in actual employment ads for these jobs from companies such as Bioware, Blizzard Entertainment, and the Walt Disney Company.

You’ll be learning about the Game Industry, 3D Modeling for Games using Autodesk 3dstudio Max 2008 (including low-poly and subdivision theory), UV Mapping, Game Textures using Adobe Photoshop (including visual effects), ZBrush by Pixologic, Normal Mapping & Texture Baking, how to import your 3D assets into a game engine, and how to set up and display your work in an online portfolio for employers.

The program is in development and we expect it to be enrollable in the spring of 2008.
*Pending Department of Education Approval.
