I’ve posted about Linda’s furiae.combefore, and while she’s still off on sick leave, the work there is timeless and her tutorials are always worth a look.
So, imagine my surprise when I took my periodic trek into her site to find some new content! This time, it’s papier maché masks, and they are no less than astounding. I was actually saying, “that’s papier maché?!” right out loud – people on campus pretty much already think I’m nuts, though, so that’s OK.
Just as amazing are the photos of the masks. Beautifully lit and composed on live models, the photos and the masks have me not sure if I want to get back into photography or start anew at mask making!
The 404 Error page – Page Not Found – is often neglected by designers, mostly because it’s not something you see right away, or something you even process when you do see it. But if you neglect the 404 Error page, you’re missing out on an opportunity to redirect users to content you want them to see.
Utterly mesmerizing, this set of Flickr images is created mechanically, within the camera itself. There are two more sets as well, make sure to check them out!
Seriously hilarious, Canadian director Patrick Boivin has created numerous stop-motion, live-action, and animated shorts. My favourites are shown above, but there are many more on Youtube.

TheNicktoons Network Animation Festivalis on the hunt for a selection of original short films created in any style of animation that do not exceed 10 minutes in length.Submitted shorts will be chosen by a pre-selection jury and will be showcased on-air, online and during the network’s exclusive live event in October. Prizes will be allotted for five awards: Grand Jury Award; Student Award; Producer’s Choice, Viewer’s Choice Award; and the festival’s Grand Prize, the Nick Development Award.
The winner of the Nick Development Award will receive $30,000 towards the development of a show bible, pilot script and storyboard along with the guidance of the Nick development team. Additionally, Nicktoons Network has partnered with mtvU, MTV’s college network reaching over 750 campuses nationwide, to tap into their acclaimed Best Film On Campus student filmmaker community.The festival will be featured on Bestfilmoncampus.com throughout the summer, and the winner of the Student Award will also have the opportunity to see their work featured nationally as the “mtvU Film of the Week.”
A very beautiful sepia-toned animation that is poignant as well as wonderfully animated and textured. The site itself is in Spanish (I think?) but you don’t need to understand the language to comprehend a short like this.
This is a fascinating project comparing photos of people with the cars they’ve driven for a very long time. I especially like the similar-but-not-identical settings of the sets of the photos.

A highly impressive group of more than 100 Flickr sets by Maryellen McFadden, a retired graphic designer in Oregon, this is an excellent resource for graphic designers. Vintage photos, Pictorial Modernism, the graphic design history from Switzerland, Canada, Cuba, Japan and more, film posters, calligraphy – you name it, she’s got it, and it’s in spades and very high quality, at that.
It’ll take a long time to get through this, so make sure to bookmark it and use as part of your morgue files for reference whenever you need a boost.
